The Gay Couples Study:

With high rates of seroconversion among gay men in relationships, and primary partners an often unrecognized source of new HIV infections, studying gay male couples is an important next step in HIV research and prevention. The Gay Couples Study endeavors to take that step. The study is conducted by San Francisco State’s Center for Research on Gender and Sexuality.

The Gay Couples Study seeks to explore a number of issues, including how and why gay male couples make agreements about sex, the types and styles of those agreements, and how those agreements differ relative to couple serostatus. These issues are important to understand, as little is known about gay male couples, the dynamics that may affect their relationships, and how these dynamics may in turn affect HIV risk.

The Gay Couples Study has recruited 650 gay male couples from the San Francisco Bay Area to participate in a three year, follow-up study. Our sample represents the diversity of the Bay Area and includes nearly 50% interracial couples, equal numbers of concordant negative, concordant positive, and serodiscordant couples, as well as individuals involved in closed or monogamous and open or polyamorous relationships.

Currently, we are seeking gay male couples to participate in a ONE time face-to-face interview, taking approximately 70-90 minutes to complete. Each participating person will also receive $40 compensation upon completion of the interview.

2010:

Oklahoma State University Study: Hello, everyone! My name is Olivia Leeker, a 3rd year doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology PhD program at Oklahoma State University. I am currently conducting a research project for my dissertation exploring individuals feelings about imagined acts of infidelity within their current romantic relationships.

If you are over the age of 18, self-identity as lesbian or gay, and are involved in a current romantic relationship, we would like to encourage you to participate in this study by completing an online survey at http://frontpage.okstate.edu/coe/olivialeeker/ which should take approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

Upon completion of the survey, interested participants will be directed to a separate website (so that names will not be connected to survey responses) where they can enter into a drawing to WIN one of two $25.00 gift cards to Walmart by providing the following information: name, email address, and telephone number.

Columbia University Relationship Satisfaction Study:

Greetings! We are conducting a study on relationship satisfaction with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer couples. Because the majority of studies on relationship satisfaction and distress are conducted with heterosexual couples, less is known about LGBTQ relationships. Even less is known is about LGBTQ relationships where one or more of the members is a person of color or transgender. The responses from those who participate in this study will ideally be useful for LGBTQ communities and therapists alike. We would appreciate your help!

We are looking for LGBTQ couples who have been in relationships for 2 years or longer to take the survey. The survey takes about 45 minutes to complete, responses are kept completely anonymous, and by participating you have a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card. Both members of the couple would need to complete the survey and it can be completed in Spanish or in English.
To participate, click the website link below in the contact info.

Thank you in advance for helping us with this important research!

Former Projects:

2009:

  • What does it look like when gay/lesbian couples go through Gottman Method Couples Therapy? We are compiling two case studies to publish in the Journal of Marriage and Family Therapy to show other therapists how successful same-sex couples can be with this approach.

2008:

  • Summer 2008 we'll begin by continuing John Gottman's research on couples, specifically examining the physiological overwhelm same-sex couples (gay and lesbian) experience when discussing infidelity.
